Pinewood Derby Rules and Regulations


  1. Length, Width and Clearance
    1. Maximum overall width (incl. wheels and axles) shall not exceed 2-3/4".
    2. Minimum width between wheels shall be 1-3/4", so car will clear the center guide strip on the track.
    3. Minimum clearance between bottom of car and track shall be 3/8", so car will clear the center guide strip on the track.
    4. Maximum length of car shall not exceed 7".
  2. Weight and Appearance
    1. Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces. The readings of the Official Race Scale will be considered final. The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood or metal only, provided it is securely built into the body or firmly affixed to it. No loose materials of any kind are permitted in or on the car.
    2. Mercury shall not be used for adding weight. It is a potential health hazard.
    3. Details such as steering wheels, drivers, spoilers, decals, painting and interior details are permissible, as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width and weight specifications.
    4. Cars with wet paint will not be accepted.
    5. It is the responsibility of the scout and parent to modify the car to meet weigh-in requirements.
  3. Wheels and Axles
    1. Only the official Scout Grand Prix wheels and axles can be used on the cars (wheels/axles that are in the box with the car).
    2. Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited.
    3. The car shall not ride on any type of springs.
    4. The car must be freewheeling with no starting device or other propulsion.
    5. All four (4) wheels MUST touch the racing surface.
    6. No significant modifications to the wheels are permitted. Minor sanding only, is permitted.
  4. Lubrications
    1. Dry powdered lubricants only. Cars may be lubricated before inspection. No further lubricants will be permitted after official weigh-in.
  5. Ground Rules
    1. District race at Monroeville Mall is open to the top three finishers amongst the Cub and Webelos Scouts in each Pack registered in the Tecumsa District.
    2. Pack 111 race is open to all registered Pack 111 Cub and Webelos Scouts.
    3. Cars must have been made for the current scouting year's Pinewood Derby. Cars made for a previous Pinewood Derby are not permitted in the race.
    4. Precut cars are NOT permitted to race in the Tecumsa District Pinewood Derby or Pack 111 races.
    5. If a car jumps off the track, the heat will be run again. If the same car jumps off the track a second time, it will automatically lose the heat.
    6. If a car leaves it's lane and interferes with another car, the heat will be run again. If this occurs again, the heat will be run once more without the interfering car. The interfering car will automatically lose the heat.
    7. If a car suffers mechanical problems (loses an axle, breaks a wheel, etc.) then a member of the Derby Committee, if possible, will make emergency repairs.
    8. Only race officials will be permitted into the registration and track area. THIS RULE WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED.
  6. Inspection
    1. Each car must pass inspection of the Derby Committee Inspection Team before it can compete. The team has the right to disqualify those cars that do not meet above specifications. It is the responsibility of the scout and parent to modify the car to meet pre-race inspection requirements.
    2. All cars must be weighed before they are permitted to race.
    3. Car owners will be informed at the weigh-in of any violation(s) of the rule(s).
    4. ALL DECISIONS OF THE INSPECTION TEAM ARE FINAL.
